Project Review

Chiang Mai has many foreign ex-patriots and there are multiple publications catering to that community.  The largest and most widely recognized of these English entertainment magazines within Northern Thailand is now available as an internship project.  This well established, yet unique and dynamic, entertainment magazine has a variety of sections such as local news, local events, announcements, and also in-depth articles about the region of South-East Asia.  In addition to the magazine, the company also works with web design and various other media outlets.  This magazine is not only appealing for an intern because of its vibrancy, but also because of its inviting staff and office space.  It is the perfect experience for individuals who are searching for experience in a very well publicized international media outlet.

Major Responsibilities

Interns in the project will work with the Thai and foreign, native English speaking staff in one or many of the following areas:

  • Editorial
  • Marketing
  • Web Design
  • Photography
  • Print and design
  • Multi media

Interns are invited to work in multiple areas of the business during their internship.  Each area is only open to one intern at any one time to insure a personalized experience.  Working hours for regular interns will normally be between the hours of 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays, but on special occasions (such as the monthly party) interns may be required to work on weekends and evenings.

Skills/ Qualifications

Volunteers do not need any specific qualifications, but should be able-bodied, enjoy working outside and flexible to change. Decisions on events in Chiang Mai City Hall are sometimes made at the last minute which requires a great amount of flexibility and understanding for all involved.

Arrangements for Room/Food

Accommodation and  Food:

  • SLEEPING:  All volunteers in this project stay in or near the Friends For Asia volunteer house.  Friends For Asia operates out of a large teak wood house, located in a quiet, safe neighborhood in Chiang Mai City.  The house is two stories, can accommodate up to 10 volunteers at any one time, has air conditioning, western style toilets and hot water showers.  If room is not available in the Friends For Asia House, volunteers may have to stay in one of the neighborhood apartment buildings.  If this occurs, your project fee will cover your accommodation costs.  If a volunteer decides to stay in a place of their own choosing, then they will have to pay for their own accommodation.  The apartments are nice, but some rooms may not have air conditioning.  Volunteers have to commute daily by public transportation or bicycle.
  • EATING: Breakfast is provided for all volunteers at the Friends For Asia House.  All volunteers are invited to join the employees of Chiang Mai City Hall for lunch every work day.  Special diet requirements or restrictions can easily be accommodated.  Volunteers who decide not to stay in Friends For Asia housing will not have breakfast provided.
