Project Review

Students take Greek language at a level appropriate to ability -  intermediate, or advanced.  Classes are held four to five hours per day, five days per week, for six weeks, in the Arcadia Center for Hellenic, Mediterranean and Balkan Studies. This intensive language learning experience is equivalent to two semesters of university-level instruction in Modern Greek language.

The Arcadia Center is located in Pangrati, a residential neighborhood located near the original Olympic Stadium from the 1896 Games. Pangrati mirrors modern Greece, blending traditional nineteenth-century Athenian family residences and open air markets with contemporary office buildings and trendy cafes and tavernas. Students have wireless access in both the Center and their accommodation.

Orientation and Cultural Activities: Odeion of Herodes Atticus The program begins with a comprehensive orientation, and cultural activities are scheduled throughout the program. Students are eligible to earn a CoCurricular Learning Certificate.

A selection of staff-guided, co-curricular activities designed to foster an understanding of Greek history and culture are offered each summer. Students will take part in a number of field study excursions, which may include visits to a number of the following:

  • Akropolis and new museum
  • Ottoman Athens including the Benaki Ottoman Museum
  • Ancient Athens including the Athenian Agora and Kerameikos
  • Athens Festival performance at the Odeion of Herodes Atticus
  • Guided walk through contemporary Athens – central markets and surrounding area
  • Kaisariani - an area of World War II interest
  • Delphi
  • Nafplio, the first capital of Greece
  • Temple of Poseidon at Sounio
