Project Review

This summer study abroad for two weeks in Greece, a country full of sun, sea and thousands of islands, offering its visitors a journey through man's historic and cultural memory. Thessaloniki, where the program is based, is Greece's second largest city. This area of Macedonia was the home of Aristotle and the kingdom of Alexander the Great, offering over 4,000 years of Greek history and civilization. The ancient city of Thessaloniki is also world-renowned as a center of Byzantine art and architecture. While on this program students will gain an appreciation for the significance of cultural context in health and illness in an increasingly diverse world. Topics considered include psychosomatic illness, substance abuse, pain and healing, compliance with medical regimens, management of chronic illness, illness prevention and wellness, stress and coping, and health care policy and reform. In addition to attending lectures given by local health psychologists and other experts, students will take a walking tour of Thessaloniki and have a chance to attend a live performance at the Erodium in Athens next to the Acropolis.
