Project Review

This study tour will expose students to ancient Greek mythology through readings and firsthand experience in the region that gave rise to the myths. The program will visit numerous ancient Greek sites and museums located on both the Greek mainland and islands. These provide familiarity with the land and established icons of ancient Greek art, architecture, and engineering and with the related concepts of landscape and aesthetics. The accompanying readings offer literary, social, and cultural dimensions to the mute artifacts. Readings on Greek history and culture supply background for understanding both the artifacts and the mythology, while readings in ancient Greek mythology provide opportunities to discuss the importance of mythology, meanings of the stories, and ideas about the world, gods, human and gender identity, religious beliefs, moral standards, and more.In addition, glorious beaches, spectacular mountains, scrumptious Mediterranean food, and lively cultural events promise to make this an exciting, invigorating, and overall enriching way to study mythology.
