This course explores the cultural heritage of the Republic of Macedonia (capital city Skopje), as well as the Northern Greek region of Macedonia (capital city Thessaloniki). These two adjoining entities in South-Eastern Europe share the legacy of numerous empires, beginning with the oldest and most famous one in antiquity, associated with Alexander the Great. From that time onward, they were fought over and ruled by a variety of peoples, including the Romans, the Byzantines, and the Ottomans all of whom left myriads of cultural traces, both material and spiritual in nature. Our three-week program will focus on the different artistic and cultural strata associated with this historic process and the complex identities resulting from the coexistence of the different ethnic, religious, and linguistic communities in this area of South-Eastern Europe.Instruction modules will include lectures, guided tours of archaeological sites, churches, mosques, museums and art galleries, and discussions with professionals working on cultural heritage issues.
