This programme has evolved from a long tradition of delivering Outdoor Education programmes at LJMU which now enjoys an international reputation as an Outdoor Education provider in Higher Education. Traditionally the term ‘outdoor education’ was been applied to outdoor activities that involved physical challenge and risk in potentially outdoor hazardous environments, and had an educational goal of character development. Outdoor Education has developed significantly over the past 50 years and has a wide range of applications. It is seen as a means of approaching educational objectives through guided, direct experience in the outdoor environment, and it is seen as a tool for enabling human development, learning and environmental understanding. Its applications vary from outdoor recreation, environmental education, physical education, geography, development training, and adventure therapy, to name a few. On this course the scientific understanding of the environment is enhanced by a holistic approach which links traditional geographical subjects with the foundations of Outdoor Education and a range of outdoor activities and leadership competences. Students develop key knowledge in psychological and philosophical underpinnings to Outdoor Education, outdoor leadership, teaching and learning, and develop key practical and professional skills in being able to work safely and effectively in an outdoor environment. Students also develop a critical understanding of the interactions between physical and biotic environments, geography of the outdoor landscape, and of the concept of a sustainable relationship between the human race and planet Earth. They also have the opportunity to study specialized areas such as Adventure Therapy and Recreational Ecology.
