Project Review

Teaching as an international volunteer with Cross-Cultural Solutions can be a rewarding way to interact with students of all ages and backgrounds who are eager to learn. In the educational centers where volunteers work—schools, community centers, and other organizations—services are provided to local people at no- or low-cost but the demand for education is often greater than the supply of teachers and resources are scarce. Support local teachers working with students who have special needs so they can get more individualized attention. Volunteer with at-risk youth who see you as a positive role model. Or, help students master the English skills that open doors to better career opportunities. As a volunteer assisting teachers of special education, you might help students with disabilities gain self-confidence and challenge social stigmas associated with disabilities. In schools overseas, volunteer teachers are highly valued because you can be a positive role model to children and further develop students’ interest in education. In teaching conversational English, you can exchange your language skills with students of all ages from underserved communities.

Major Responsibilities

Volunteers help to teach conversational English to people of all ages in Salvador. Knowledge of English offers better opportunities for those seeking employment, and school attendance often increases when the community knows that there is a native English speaker volunteering there. Volunteers can also assist teachers of special education with sports activities, arts classes, and dance lessons for children with learning disabilities.

Any Missing Important Information

Will there be time to travel when I'm volunteering abroad?

Free time is available some afternoons, most evenings, and every weekend. Our local staff can give you suggestions for places to visit, or you can create your own agenda. During your weekend you can take excursions to other parts of the country, or you may choose not to travel, and stay in town to get to know the community better. You may also choose to travel before or after the program (but this may affect the tax deductibility of your airfare).
