Project Review

Cross-Cultural Solutions has special opportunities for volunteers to work side-by-side with local people in healthcare. With small health clinics and understaffed hospitals serving low-income communities, volunteers support the over-worked staff, adding to their efficiency and allowing more people in need to be served. Volunteers provide moral support and reduce anxiety for patients and/or residents in communities where many people still view doctor’s visits as a last resort.

Our healthcare placements offer an exceptional learning opportunity, in addition to a gratifying volunteer experience. For those who aspire to a career in health-related fields, these placements offer an international learning ground where you can not only view healthcare in practice, but healthcare as practiced by professionals in a different country. For anyone interested in social services, observing the administration of health services in other parts of the world is invaluable.

Major Responsibilities

Salvador is one of the only places in the Latin American region where CCS volunteers can care for and provide companionship at support homes for people affected by HIV/AIDS. The lack of basic health education in Salvador has a strong relationship with high rates of early parenthood and HIV/AIDS, and the stigma associated with the disease means that many go undiagnosed. Volunteers can also observe and assist local health professionals in Salvador.

Any Missing Important Information

Will there be time to travel when I'm volunteering abroad?

Free time is available some afternoons, most evenings, and every weekend. Our local staff can give you suggestions for places to visit, or you can create your own agenda. During your weekend you can take excursions to other parts of the country, or you may choose not to travel, and stay in town to get to know the community better. You may also choose to travel before or after the program (but this may affect the tax deductibility of your airfare).
