This orphanage is run by a non-profit organization with an aim of providing a full-time home to shelter children on a long-term basis. We are situated in the remnants of the ’Tingua Rainforest.’ It is an ideal setting; children are able to get away from the violence and poverty of the favellas (shantytowns) that most of them grew up in. It is 30 minutes away from Xerem, which itself is an hour’s bus ride away from the center of Rio de Janeiro. Currently we shelter 8 children (6 boys and 2 girls) between 8 and 13. Back in 2002, two other houses were opened in Xerem; one for teenage girls (9 live there now) and one for teenage boys (8 live there now). These houses have been set up to encourage independent living, but the teenagers are invited back on weekends to spend time with the younger children.
Volunteers are responsible for assisting with education, helping the nannies with daily routines like hygiene, organizing games, ensuring timely bedtimes, serving food for dinner and cleaning up afterwards, basic first aid, and other necessary duties. There will be spare time for sports, arts, and helping with homework.
