The Santa Teresa Ballet is a program directed at children and youth who live in areas of social risk and has as its mission to promote academically complimentary and grounding socio-cultural integration through artistic expression. The BST also aims to create a center for entertainment and culture in an area lacking such enrichment. Factors such as the existing prejudice between social classes of the neighborhood have previously prevented the creation of a cultural center. One hundred and fifty youth ranging in age from 3 ½ to 18 years old attend the ballet school, which is divided into six classes.
No specific skills or qualification are required, except the volunteer needs to be friendly, open, flexible and should have good communication skills.
Accommodation: Our volunteers are lodged in wonderful Guest Houses in Santa Teresa, one of Rio de Janeiro's most enchanting neighborhoods.
Food: Brazil is a relatively inexpensive country for foreigners, but it all depends on your lifestyle. As described above, Iko Poran houses also have fully equipped kitchens where the volunteers may cook. A meal at a restaurant may be as cheap as R$ 7.00 in very nice and healthy popular restaurants or up to R$ 30.00 in nicer places.
