Rich in natural beauty and ageless in culture, Sir Lanka is economically and educationally disadvantaged and is constantly striving to become an easily accessible nirvana for international travelers. Sri Lankans are a hopeful people who are working towards a more prosperous life, and see the English language as an important gateway to their dream. Learning English is one such way for the Sri Lankans to increase their literacy and ensure their participation in the ever-changing technological advances. Our local partners have established English schools in Galle as well as around the rural areas of Sri Lanka to help provide this service to children age 6-16. Teaching these children can be very enjoyable and rewarding, but most of the orphan centers have very limited resources and are drastically understaffed. Furthermore, the schools need good teachers to teach good English to the students.
Depending on the interest of the volunteers, they can teach English, Math, Science, or Physical education as well as the following daily activities:

There are no specific qualifications for teaching volunteers in Sri Lanka except fluency in English. Prior experience in teaching English is helpful. However, if you are not entirely confident in your teaching abilities, Global Crossroad can place you as an assistant teacher.
