Volunteer Occupational Therapists will work in the occupational therapy department of Surat Thani hospital or Trang hospital, both about two hours drive from Krabi. The staff at the departments care for patients with a wide variety of physical disabilities to help them carry on with their daily lives.Thailand became a member of the world federation of occupational therapists in 2002. The number of working therapists is still low and your personal experiences and knowledge will be welcomed.Occupational Therapy volunteers work with patients with a range of problems including physical disabilities, visual or hearing impairment, autism, children with communication difficulties or behavioural and emotional problems. There are several qualified occupational therapists at each hospital. Volunteers will rotate between working in the therapy room and sensory integration room and focus on activities for improving daily life skills. Volunteers can gain experience in paediatrics, orthopaedics and hand therapy. Volunteers may sometimes accompany local staff on home visits and can get involved in providing support to children who are in mainstream schools, and educational programmes to prepare the children for school. Occupational Therapy volunteers need to commit to a minimum of two months on the programme and have at least one year of relevant experience.
Major Job Responsibilities:
Skills & Qualification: Volunteers with relevant skills & least one year of relevant experience are welcome and will be able to take on a more specialized role. All volunteers should be active & be prepared for working in the specified project fulfilling the responsibilities.
Food: We will ensure you are provided with 3 square meals a day.
Accommodation: Local host-families are carefully selected because they are friendly, welcoming and will go out of their way to look after our volunteers. Where we can't provide host families we place our volunteers together in secure accomodation.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, so there is no firm deadline for applications. Some countries and projects require at least three months to process an application, arrange for visas, and advise you properly on how to prepare. Other countries can be processed in as little as three weeks. Whenever you are thinking of traveling, we encourage you to apply as early as possible. Having more time to prepare makes it easier for you to fundraise, and for us to advise you on preparations. It also makes more options available for tailoring a program to your individual interests and preferences.
