A lot of life is packed into the\nspaces that are uninhabited by humans. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although only covering an area of 3 square miles, Manuel\nAntonio hugs the Pacific coastline, and is home to a wide variety of\nland-dwelling and sea creatures alike. The height and girth of some cedar trees\nliving there is astounding. The looming canopy overhead spawns vines that nearly\nreach the ground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With well-maintained trails crossing its hilly landscape,\nyou can safely ramble through the jungle and appreciate Costa Rica\u2019s natural\nbeauty. Even the creeks host a variety of life; fresh water fish, tadpoles,\ncrawdads and newts to name a few. But\nmany, many more animals reside within the park boundaries. In fact, because it\nis so remote and contains virtually no modern human artifacts, these grounds\noffer a backpacking experience like no other. Some of the country\u2019s shyest are\nrarest species are found here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dedicated to protecting the ecosystems it encompass, it is\nthe best national park in\nLos Patos Sirena Trail, Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica. If you\u2019re\nfit for some tough hiking, the mountain rainforest provides unmatched views of\nthe Pacific Ocean once you break through the dense cover of the old growth\nforest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lowlands and palm forest offer open space for bird\nwatching, and are home to a plethora of mammals including white-lipped\npeccaries and the herbivorous, pig-like <em>tapir<\/em>.\nBut if you\u2019re the daring type, look out for crocodiles skulking in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/wetlands\/mangrove-swamps\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">mangrove swamps.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of the park\u2019s position on the peninsula, 11 miles of\nbeaches outline the dense, green jungle. Swimming is allowed but be warned that\nschools of hammerhead sharks migrate through there every year. Although they\nare not known to be aggressive, bull sharks are. And they also swim the coastal\nwaters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daytrips are a bit complicated since the park is so remote.\nComing all that way becomes more worth while if you stay for a few days and\nreally soak in the natural beauty. In fact, 4 of the world\u2019s 8 kinds of green sea turtle\nfrequent its shores. Winding rivers empty their waters into the Caribbean Sea,\nfavoring a nutrient dense habitat that is rich in aquatic life forms, making it\nthe best national park in\nRoxana, Pococ\u00ed, Provincia de Lim\u00f3n, Costa Rica. This <em>brackish <\/em>zone shelters caimans and river\nturtles alike, and are not uncommon sights among the locals. The rivers can be\nnavigated by boat or canoe for sight-seeing as well as for transport \u2013 in fact,\nfloating or flying are the only methods for arriving to the park, as there are\nno roads nearby. <em>\u00a1Puraselva!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aquatic animals are not the only ones to be found in this\nregion. The park is home to a menagerie of exotic birds as well. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vocabulary.com\/dictionary\/ornithologist#targetText=An%20ornithologist%20is%20someone%20who,else%20an%20ornithologist%20might%20study\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Ornithologists<\/a>\n\u2018flock\u2019 to this local each year to observe some of 330 bird species now\nidentified. Most of them are migratory, meaning sightings are seasonal. Among\nthem are scarlet macaws and other parrots, woodpeckers, many varieties of\nhummingbird, herons, egrets, falcons, oriels, etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t stare to the skies all the time or you may just miss\nwhat is right under your nose. In this top national park in Costa Rica, the red dirt\ntrails are ridden with critters waiting to be discovered; the reason why\nTortuguero is also a destination for entomologists and biology students. One\nspecies of note is the <a href=\"http:\/\/karlshuker.blogspot.com\/2017\/02\/the-giant-grasshopper-of-wisconsin.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">giant\ngrasshopper<\/a>, capable of reaching a length of 8 inches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to creepy crawlers and fluttery flyers, our\nsimian cousins can be found swinging in the trees. The\nbiggest eruption was in 1998, but subsequent smaller ones have been recorded in\nthe past two decades\u2013 the most recent in early 2019, in which the inhabitants\nof a local village were forced to evacuate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lonelyplanet.com\/costa-rica\/northwestern-costa-rica\/parque-nacional-rincon-de-la-vieja\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Parque Nacional Volc\u00e1n Rinc\u00f3n de la Vieja<\/a> is\nthe best national park\ninGuanacaste, Costa. The volcano is a real piece of geological history.\nOn the way up tothe 600,000-year-old mountain, visitors may be blessed along\nthe trail with the presence of armadillos, toucans, or even the <em>coati<\/em> (a lemur-like creature). But that\nis certainly not all. Thousands of animal species call this region home (the\nmajority of which are insects and birds). <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arriving can be a difficult and arduous\ntask, however. The nearest city is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Liberia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Liberia<\/a>,\nthe capital of the region. Any necessary amenities can be found in the city.\nThe bus station is small but relatively well connected. From there multiple,\nlocal buses must be taken before stepping foot into the park. And most of them\nare crowded and uncomfortable \u2013 and it\u2019s a bumpy ride. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you make the journey to this best national park near Liberia,\nCosta Rica, your reward is a whopping 90 square miles of pristine land\nto uncover. No city, no streets, no loud and stinky cars. Just pure, wild\nnature. Don\u2019t worry about losing yourself here as all trails are well\nmarked and maps are available upon entry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TIP:<\/strong>\nKeep your ear out for monkeys, and if you are startled by what sounds like a\nmix between a barking dog and a lion\u2019s roar, don\u2019t be alarmed. Imagine slowly lowering yourself into fresh\nwaterpools, naturally steaming at over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, for a\nwell-deserved soak \u2013 and after scrambling over the rocky, rugged land cape to\nget there, its will be well-deserved. The lakes surrounding area is made up of\nmountainous earth and cooled lava fields. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lake is a stunning sight and somewhat of a \u201cwatering\nhole\u201d meeting place for water sports enthusiasts. From adrenaline junkies\ntrying to get their \u2018fix\u2019 to fishermen just looking for a bite \u2013 there\u2019s\nsomething for everyone at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arenal.net\/arenal-volcano-national-park\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Arenal Volcano\nNational Park<\/a>. Options include renting kayaks and SUP boards, hiking to\nhigher ground for spectacular views, or simply spending the afternoon on the\nbeach watching the kite-surfers as they doodle their kites in the sky and\nswiftly skim across the surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Animals that inhabit this top national park in Costa Rica include <em>coati<\/em>, capuchin and howler monkeys,\nsloths, and jaguars (although not seen in the daytime). An overabundance of\nbirds inhabits the lake region. Ancient legend has it that while painting the sky, the gods dipped their paintbrushes into the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/mytanfeet.com\/activities\/tips-visiting-rio-celeste\/\" target=\"_blank\">R\u00edo Celeste<\/a>, giving it the deep blue color that continues to perplex onlookers today. The real reason the river radiates such a vivid hue is because of a chemical reaction that takes place when sulfur \u2013 present in the waters because of nearby volcanic activity \u2013 mixes with calcium carbonate on the riverbed. Once the pressure builds enough, a pocket of steam bursts out of\nthe surface as a geyser in a spectacular show of the nature\u2019s potential. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The geysers rocket up from the lake that sits 1000 feet\nbelow the rim of the crater (where tourists stand and watch) and reach a height\nof about 800 feet. Cerro Chirrip\u00f3 stands at 12,500 feet above sea\nlevel and is the prominent feature of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roughguides.com\/destinations\/central-america-and-the-caribbean\/costa-rica\/zona-sur\/parque-nacional-chirripo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Chirrip\u00f3\nNational Park<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To reach the peak is not an easy feat, and is perhaps\nreserved for the fittest of hikers. Yet it is this highway that makes the park accessible to visitors. Another\naccessory favoring tourists is the gondola running up a small mountainside and\ndown through a valley from one of the stations. On the way up you\u2019re scurried\nalong the forest floor only feet from the ground, but the return journey is\nmuch more daring. You may spot this beauty floating in and out of the\njungle <em>flora <\/em>while on a hike in Diria\nNational Park. While resting, it keeps its wings closed together, only\ndisplaying a camouflaged brown and yellow pigment. But upon taking flight it\nreveals its true colors. The park was extended across the southern border to\nprotect some of the indigenous groups that inhabit the forests there. Those\ntribes include the Chirrip\u00f3, Tayni, Telire,Talamanca, Ujarras, Salitre, and\nAbagra peoples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This park boasts more virgin forest than all other parks in\nCosta Rica, and it has been estimated that about two thirds of the total\nspecies found in the country live here. The absence of\nfoliage plus the grey rocks and barren landscape give the peak an eerie,\nmoon-like appearance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rim of the crater bites a bitter cold straight to your\nbones as you peer over the edge down onto the green, sulfuric lake below. Not\nmuch activity has been noted in the last 50 years since a 4 year long eruption\nin the early 1960s showered the residents of Cartago with continuous ash and\nsmoke. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201chiking\u201d trails are limited to one paved path that leads\ndirectly to the crater\u2019s edge. Definitely\namong the best national parks\nin Costa Rica, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.costarica-nationalparks.com\/caboblancoabsolutenaturalreserve.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Cabo\nBlanco Nature Reserve<\/a> takes its name from the nearby island about a mile\noff the coast, which got its name because of the encrusted bird guano on top of\nthe rock (white cape).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cabo Blanco Natural Reserve was the one of the first nature\nreserves ever established in Costa Rica, and ultimately led to the many more\nconservation parks on which the country now bases its economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 1950s the Costa Rican government encouraged its\ncitizens to \u201cdevelop\u201d the land and rewarded them with ownership rights over it.\nWithin a few years much of the peninsula\u2019s woodlands had been \u201ccultivated.\u201d In\nthe early <a href=\"https:\/\/news.co.cr\/nicolas-wessberg-natural-reserve-costa-rica-named\/53332\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">1960s\nNicolas Wessberg came from Sweden<\/a> to the area with his Danish wife Karen\nMogensen. After being deeply moved by the wildlife and plant life of Cabo\nBlanco they bought 3,000 acres (5 square miles) of land and, rather than\nclearing it, secured the status of Absolute Nature Reserve from the government\nin 1963.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tree diversity alone is enough to impress botanists and\nlaypeople alike in this best\nnational park in Montezuma, Provincia de Puntarenas, Costa Rica. Some of\nthe tallest trees are the Ceiba (Silk Cotton Tree) that reach upwards of 200\nfeet! The fastest growing trees are the Espavel (Wild Cashew), which can grow\nto 100 feet in just a few years. But the most abundant tree by far is the Pochote\n(Spiny Cedar). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As much of the land on the peninsula is occupied by farmers\nand ranchers, the reserve provides a refuge for a large variety of animals\nlike: white-tailed deer, pacas, armadillos, anteaters, howler monkeys, coyotes,\nporcupines, raccoons, tons of bird species, and even some large cats such as\nocelots and jaguarundi. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nature reserve also protects many species of fish and\nother reef critters like lobsters and oysters within its nearly 4,500 acres of\nocean area as well, making it the best national park to visit in Puntarenas, Costa Rica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a small, yet important park that can be seen in a half\nday. It is easily reachable at the end of the dirt road a short drive from the\nlittle <a href=\"https:\/\/mytanfeet.com\/cities-costa-rica\/montezuma-costa-rica\/#targetText=Montezuma%2C%20Costa%20Rica%20is%20a,looking%20for%20a%20coastal%20escape\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">coastal\ntown of Montezuma<\/a>.
