Are you seeking to make a difference in the life of disadvantaged children by providing them with valuable English skills? Are you interested in visiting the spectacular Guatemala and experience the rich Mayan culture and traditions? As Guatemala continues to develop, education must go with it. Regretfully, due to poor educational resources and infrastructure this isn't always the case. Although English is offered in the school curriculums, many schools in rural areas do not have qualified teachers. There is a huge demand for English in Guatemala today and having this skill opens up new possibilities but sadly, the poor children do not have access to this valuable skill.
In this program, you will impart English education to the children in the local schools. You can run a class independently or assist a local teacher. You will help the children improve their conversational, writing and reading skills. You will also come up with fun and interesting learning activities and lesson plans to motivate the children towards leaning English. You will also plan various extra-curricular activities for the children and help with administration duties of the school. By joining this program, you will be providing a valuable tool to the children that they can utilize to create a better life for themselves and their family. By teaching them a global language, you will open up new possibilities for them in life which in turn create a ripple effect for future generations. You will also gain fulfilling’s and rewarding hands-on teaching experience and a wonderful opportunity to make a positive difference in the children’s lives.
Volunteers below the age of 18 years will need to submit parental consent or must be accompanied by an adult guardian.

Teaching in Santa Maria (Rural Village) outside of Xela, Guatemala
In March, 2018, my husband Greg and I -- both recently retired professionals, me a teacher -- had the amazing opportunity of teaching in a Mayan village about an hour outside of Xela, Guatemala. This was a super supportive school, with colourful classrooms, appreciative staff, friendly students, and an encouraging administration who actually asked us to present a Professional Education session to his staff on HOW to teach English as a Second Language (with games, songs, posters etc). We LOVED every day in the school. Our homestay was fine and the chicken bus rides a bit scary, but our Spanish classes were helpful, and our weekend tours of Guatemala were fabulous. On the whole, we highly recommend this volunteer adventure trip, and we gained real insights into Guatemalan life. We are already planning for Ecuador for 2019.
