Overview
Opwall is offering field courses in the UK at the Knepp Estate in West Sussex. Knepp is a renowned rewilding site in Britain, providing a fantastic environment for volunteers to learn about rewilding and gain valuable skills for careers in conservation and ecology, both in the UK and around the world.
In 2002, Knepp Estate adopted a unique approach, minimizing human intervention and allowing the fields to return to their natural state. This has had remarkable effects on wildlife, resulting in a significant increase in biodiversity. There are more types of plants and insects, and threatened bird species like turtle doves are making a comeback. Moreover, 13 out of the UK's 17 bat species have returned to the area.
During the program, volunteers will attend lectures and learn how to assess UK habitats and calculate DEFRA biodiversity scores. They will also discover how to measure carbon storage and sequestration. Students will gain hands-on experience in various survey methods, including tracking large mammals, using bird mist nets, counting birds, surveying pollinators, and classifying habitats. It's a great opportunity to learn and contribute to conservation efforts.
