Overview
The Galapagos Islands, located a thousand kilometers from the coast of Ecuador, represent the second largest marine reserve on the planet and are also the second most volcanically active archipelago after Hawaii. The archipelago is made up of 13 large islands with an area of more than 10 km², nine medium-sized islands with an area between one and 10 km², and another 107 small islets. It also has rocky promontories of few square meters, all of them distributed around the line of the terrestrial equator, which give it another almost unique characteristic: having land located both in the northern hemisphere and in the southern hemisphere, as only happens to the Malay Archipelago.
