Built on the rocky ridge, next to the Romanesque castle chapel, the defiantly towering residential building with the dominant and distinctive west tower, known as the Heinrichturm, rises to the west.
The builder of the first weir system, which was built around 1130, is Hugo von Petronell, a follower of the Diepoldinger, the Margraves Cham and Vohburg. From the time the castle was completed, he called himself "von Liechtenstein" and is the progenitor of the Princely Liechtenstein Family. Therefore, the castle is the namesake "ancestral castle" of the princes of Liechtenstein.
The castle was the seat of the Liechtenstein family for almost two centuries before it was presumably passed outside of the Liechtenstein family through a marriage contract. In the course of the 14th century, the castle was expanded to its full, present-day length, and in the 16th century a comprehensive expansion followed, and high-ranking noble families were owners.
