The adventurous Lhasa to Kathmandu Overland Tour via Everest Base Camp (EBC) is the most remarkable road trip in Tibet. This roadside journey will take you through some of the best countrysides on the Tibetan plateau. Also, this comprehensive tour includes all the major cultural and historical attractions of Tibet.
8 days- Lhasa overland tour commences from Lhasa and following the classic route to Gyantse, Shigatse, and EBC and finally winds up at the Kyirong (Gyirong) border before you exit to Nepal. The beautiful high passes, the picturesque Tibetan landscape, typical rural villages, nomad Tibetan peoples, high altitude lakes, famous glaciers are significant features of this Lhasa overland tour.
The tour begins by exploring Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet. You'll discover the stunning holy city by visiting several important landmarks such as Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Barkhor Street, Drepung, and Sera Monastery. All these iconic landmarks hold both religious and cultural significance. While sightseeing these places, you'll learn about Tibetan Buddhism, culture, and religion and get spiritual experience too.
Further, you'll take a scenic drive to Shigatse via Gyantse. On the way, there are several small side roads off the highway that leads to pristine Yamdrok Lake and high passes like Karo La and Khamba La. In Gyantse, you can explore Khumbum Stupa and Phalkot Monastery. You can even enjoy the distant view of Gyantse Fortress.
From here, you continue your road trip to Shigatse, the second-largest city in Tibet. It is also famous for the massive Tashi Lhunpo monastery. You can explore the monastery and admire the beautiful ancient mural paintings. Then you proceed towards Rongbuk Monastery, one of the major attractions of Lhasa to Kathmandu Overland Tour. It is one of the highest Tibetan monasteries in the world that lies near to base camp of the north side of Mt. Everest.
Nonetheless, you can enjoy the panorama of mighty peaks, including Mt. Everest (locally known as Mt. Chomolungma) (8,848m), Mt. Lhotse (8,516m), Mt. Makalu (8,485m), Mt. Cho Oyu (8,188m). While touring around Rongbuk Monastery, you'll get an excellent chance to experience the authentic life of Tibetan monks and nuns. The next day, you'll enjoy the sunrise view over the peak of Mt. Everest. Then you visit the North Everest Base Camp and get close sight of the mighty Everest peak.
After spending a fabulous moment in base camp, continue your drive on the Friendship Highway to Kyirong (Gyirong) town near the Nepal border. This day you'll get a stunning backdrop of Pleiku Tso Lake, Mt. Shisha Pangma (8,027m), and many other giant peaks. Finally, after crossing the Kyirong (Gyirong) border, you enter Nepal. Passing through picturesque villages, green hills, waterfalls, you'll arrive in Kathmandu. - Day 1 - Arrival in Tibet, Lhasa (3,650m/11,980ft) - Transfer to Hotel and tour Preparation
Welcome to Tibet, often called the roof of the world! Our Tibetan guide will greet you at the airport and transfer you to the respective hotel in Lhasa upon your arrival. On the way to the hotel, you can enjoy the incredible views of Potala Palace, the lovely free-flowing Lhasa river, and the colorful Lhasa city. After check-in at the hotel, you can take a rest and acclimatize to the thin air on Tiebtan's plateau. Make sure to keep yourself hydrated, so drink plenty of water and let your body get adjusted to the high altitude of Tibet. Overnight stay in Lhasa.
- Day 2 - Sightseeing Tour in Lhasa
We spend our day visiting several monasteries in Lhasa in the company of a guide and interpreter. One of these is the Sera Monastery, a best-preserved monastery in Tibet within its whitewashed walls and golden roofs. After lunch we visit Norbulingka, a summer palace of the Dalai Lama and the Jokhang Temple, a most sacred shrine in Tibet. Surrounding the Jokhang is the Barkor – a maze of narrow cobbled streets that is the central market of Lhasa. Overnight at Hotel, Breakfast included.
- Day 3 - Second day sightseeing tour in Lhasa
We visit Potala Palace in the morning. It is a palace that dominates the city of Lhasa. It is a spectacular building containing private quarters of the Dalai Lama as well as numerous grand state rooms and many important chapels. There has been a Palace on this site since the 5th or 6th century, but the present Palace was constructed in the 17th century. After lunch, we visit the Drepung Monastery, which was founded in the 14th century. It used to be the largest monastery in the world, with a population of around 10,000 monks. These days the number has fallen down to hundred. Overnight at Hotel, Breakfast included.
- Day 4 - Lhasa to Shigatse (3900m/12792ft) 350 Km, 7 hrs
Our drive follows the Tsangpo River. We ascend up to 15,700-foot Khampa La. We see Yamdrok Lake below and in the near distance rises a great snow peak of Ningdzingzonka. We then head westward along the lake and drive toward Gyantse. In Gyantse, we visit the famous Pelkor Monastery. The Pelkor Chode Monastery also includes Gyantse Kumbum. The Kumbum has nine floors and each tier has unique chapels. It is considered the largest of the three Kumbums in Tibet. After one and half hour drive, we arrive in Shigatse. - Day 5 - Shigatse to Xegar (4200m) 240 Km, 6 hrs
Morning Visit Panchen Lama’s Tashilhumpu Monastery. Then Drive to Xegar crossing over Gyatchula (a pass of 5,200m). Overnight at Guesthouse, Breakfast included
- Day 6 - Xegar - Rongbuk (4980m) – Everest Base Camp, 9-10 Hrs
We leave Rongbuk in the morning to visit the Everest Base Camp (5,250m/17,220ft). We drive to Everest base camp by local bus. On the way, we enjoy spectacular views of high mountains like Cho Oyu (8,201m/26,906ft), Shishapangma (8,013m/26,289ft) and, of course, the mighty Everest (8,848m/29,028ft) also known as Mt. Chomolongma in the Tibetan side. Today, we accomplish one of the major highlights of our trip, reaching the base camp of Mt. Everest. We make approximately a 16 km round trip around the Everest Base Camp. The base camp itself is dry and barren, but the view of Everest is more than compensating. After spending some quality time at the base of the world’s highest mountain then we drive back to Xegar. Overnight at Guesthouse, breakfast included.
- Day 7 - Xegar to Kerung (3700m) 315 km, 5-6 hrs
Drive to Kerung by over-crossing the high pass of Lulang La (5,050m) from where one can enjoy the magnificent view of the Mt. Xishapagma (8,212m) & Mt. Cho Oyu (8,201m). Overnight at Guesthouse in Kerung, breakfast included.
- Day 8 - Kerung to Kathmandu: 200 Km, 11-12 hrs
